Biography
Dr. Jansen is the Department Head of the Economics Department, the Director of the Private Enterprise Research Center and the Jeff Montgomery Professor of Economics at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and undergraduate degrees in mathematics and economics from Saint Louis University. Dr. Jansen’s teaching fields are Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, Financial Economics, and Econometrics. He has taught courses at the University of North Carolina, at North Carolina State University, Indiana University, the National University of Ireland at Galway, Korea University (Seoul), and the Southwest University of Finance and Economics (Chengdu, China). He has chaired almost fifty doctoral dissertations, and his students have received jobs in academia, government, and in the private sector both in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Jansen is the recipient of an Association of Former Students teaching award at Texas A&M University as well as awards for graduate student teaching and graduate student mentoring.
Dr. Jansen’s research interests include macroeconomics and financial economics. Currently his research interests are focused on studying the impact of remittances on recipient countries, studying the impact of monetary policy on asset prices, including the impact on price bubbles in equity and housing markets, and research on the jobless recoveries. He also maintains an interest in the economics of education, and is involved in a number of research projects that investigate the role and impact of charter schools, and the impact of teacher incentive pay in student achievement. Dr. Jansen has published over seventy articles in academic journals, monographs and book chapters. He has presented his research at numerous seminars and conferences in the United States and abroad. In addition, he Jansen has provided consulting services to Law and Economics Consulting Group, to Charles River Associates, and to Christensen Associates, including work quantifying damages and valuation of firms.
Dr. Jansen has served as department head, as director of graduate programs in economics, and as director of undergraduate programs in economics at Texas A&M University. He was co-editor and then editor of the academic journal Economic Inquiry. He was a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, and conducted research at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Maastricht University, and Catholic University Leuven. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the State of Texas Advanced Research Program, the Texas Education Agency, as well as from several private foundations and organizations. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Ireland.
