To change your major to Economics, your Texas A&M unofficial transcript must reflect that you meet all requirements below at time of application submission.

If you do not meet the requirements, your application will be denied upon review. The Department will not hold applications for in progress classes.

Change of major applications are submitted in Howdy using the "Change of Major" card.

Change of Major Requirements

GPA Requirement

  • 2.75 minimum cumulative Texas A&M GPA
Economics Requirements
  • Completed ECON 203 with a C or better
  • Completed ECON 323 at Texas A&M with a C or better
NOTE: Students currently enrolled in ECON 203 or ECON 323 will be denied. Applications with ECON 203 or ECON 323 in progress will NOT be held. Waivers are not considered for this requirement.
  • Economics GPA of at least 3.0 from all attempted ECON classes
    • All Economics classes and attempts will be calculated into this GPA, not just ECON 203 and ECON 323
    • Includes Economics courses transferred to Texas A&M
    • Includes courses retaken [ex: ECON 202 C & ECON 202 TA will both be factored]
Hours Requirement
  • At least 30 graded hours completed at Texas A&M, not in progress
    • 15 hours for Blinn TEAM students
  • No more than 75 total earned hours
    • Includes transfer credit completed once admitted to A&M
    • EXCEPTION Students Admitted to A&M as Freshmen: College hours earned prior to graduation from high school, through dual credit or credit by exam (AP), will not count toward the maximum hour cap for change of major requirements per Undergraduate Studies
    • Students Admitted to Texas A&M as Transfers: high school credit exception is voided

Waivers

Students who do not meet all requirements have an opportunity to apply to change majors to Economics by utilizing the waiver request in the Howdy System and completing the essays. Applications with missing requirements are not automatically considered for waivers, instead they are denied. It is your responsibility to pay attention to the requirements and your eligibility status.

  • A waiver is a request and should not be treated as a guarantee; as it can be denied.
  • Waivers will be considered on a case by case basis, with consideration given to time to degree and remaining coursework.
  • Students with more than 75 hours but less than 90 hours at the time of application may submit a waiver.
  • Students missing or are currently enrolled in ECON 203 or ECON 323 are automatic denials. Waivers are not considered for this requirement. No exceptions.
  • A waiver denial is a final answer from the Department and follow-up inquiries questioning the decision will not be considered or answered.
