The College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University boasts more than 130 programs of study, inspiring various ways for students to enter larger conversations of learning. One avenue Aggies can explore is Global Engagement opportunities designed to expand their global knowledge through firsthand experience within other settings and cultures. Thanks to the Clarissa J. ’78 and Steve A. Streetman ’77 Global Study Scholarship, these worldly possibilities have become aspirations realized for several Arts and Sciences students, with many more to come.
In addition to financial support, this scholarship features a robust lineage of love for Aggieland from the Streetman family. Clarissa and Steve both graduated from Texas A&M in 1978 and 1977, respectively. In the years since, they have had four children together, each of whom has received at least one degree from Texas A&M as well: Kyle in 2008 and 2010; Amanda in 2014; Allison in 2015; and Tori in 2017 and 2023. Also, Steve’s father graduated in 1943. In other words, their scholarship punctuates more than 80 years of love for Texas A&M.
“Texas A&M is important to us and our family,” the Streetmans said. “We felt the need to give back to the university, as it has given us so much. The College of Arts and Sciences is the heartbeat of the university, as every student has to go through a class in the college.”
The Global Engagement program is near and dear to our hearts. All of our children have gone through study abroad programs, and it has been a highlight in their education. We saw the global impact that a study abroad program had on their education and life. We want to make sure every student has the ability to see the world and experience a global perspective.
Distributions from the Streetmans’ scholarship endowment annually provide one or more scholarships to full-time students in good standing with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPR who are pursuing undergraduate degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences and participating in a credit-bearing study abroad experience. Recipients are selected by a committee of faculty and/or staff at Texas A&M that is appointed by the dean of Arts and Sciences.
“The Global Engagement program is near and dear to our hearts,” the Streetmans added. “All of our children have gone through study abroad programs, and it has been a highlight in their education. We saw the global impact that a study abroad program had on their education and life. We want to make sure every student has the ability to see the world and experience a global perspective.”
The Education Abroad program at Texas A&M facilitates the international experiences for more than 5,600 Aggies each academic year — more than any other public university — and features offerings in excess of 100 different countries. The Streetmans describe the program as integral to the Aggie experience.
“Education abroad can broaden educational horizons by providing students with opportunities to experience diverse cultures, perspectives and academic environments,” they said. “It promotes cross-cultural understanding, enhances global awareness and prepares students for an interconnected world. We love giving back to Texas A&M with this global study scholarship. Whoop!”
