What does an Academic Advisor do?
The Role of an Academic Advisor- Registration planning
- Help students understand degree requirements and develop a realistic plan to graduation
- Provide appropriate campus resource referrals as identified
- Submit requests using the University Adjustment System to aid in degree progress
- Q-Drop & Withdrawal Discussions
- Enforce College & University Policies, Procedures, & Requirements
The Role of an Academic Advisor is NOT
- Extending missed deadlines – deadlines are deadlines and have been thoroughly communicated
- Registering students who missed their registration time
- Act as an assistant
- Schedule advising appointments – use the Navigate360 scheduling system
- Register students – advisors review degree plan progression and recommend course schedule options [ex: economics elective + life & physical science + math, etc], selecting specific classes is the responsibility of the student.
- Look up exact information you can Google – we will give you the information for you to do the research
- Advise on other majors – Transition Academic Programs serves in that role
- Meet or correspond with anyone except the STUDENT regarding their academic record [see FERPA]
Our goal is for students to enter the workforce as independent adults that problem-solve when given the tools and resources, meet deadlines, and produce quality work.

Preparing for Registration FAQs
Registering for Classes
This section focuses specifically on common questions the Economics Advising Team often fields regarding preparing for registering for classes.
-
When do I register?
You will check your registration time assignment using the "Registration Readiness" card in Howdy.
Texas A&M provides students with three opportunities to add and drop classes: pre-registration, open registration, and add/drop week. Additionally, there is a short period where students can drop courses without penalty or using a Q Drop called No Record Drop.
Pre-Registration: Specifically assigned 48-hour registration time slot during pre-registration to create a schedule for the upcoming semester.
- Spring Classes: End of October or Early November.
- Fall Classes: End of March or Early April.
- Summer Classes: Same Time as Fall Classes.
Open Registration: After pre-registration ends, the system opens for the whole campus.
Add/Drop Week: The first five days of a fall or spring semester (first four days of a summer term) when students can adjust their schedule without penalty.
No Record Drop: Students may drop classes with special permission from the Dean's Office - Undergraduate Education Advising Office through the 12th class day of a fall or spring term. Full refunds will be given for courses dropped during these periods provided the student remains enrolled in at least one class.
Adding or Dropping Deadlines
- Add: 5th class day of a fall or spring semester; 4th class day of a summer term
- Drop: 5th class day of a fall or spring semester; 4th class day of a summer term
*For specific fall, spring, and summer term dates always refer to the academic calendar
Late Add or Drop
Students requesting to add a course after adding or dropping deadlines must have the approval of:
- The Dean's Office - Undergraduate Education Advising Office
- Department of Economics Advising
- The Instructor of the Course
-
What do I need to do to prepare for pre-registration?
To register during the assigned 48-hour pre-registration window, students must complete ALL Registration Readiness tasks in Howdy and clear ALL holds prior to the assigned registration time.
Search and select the “Registration Readiness” card in Howdy
Complete all Action Items listed on Registration Readiness Howdy Card
- View Registration Times
- Submit Terms of Use Agreements for the term you expect to register
- Complete Location Updates for the term you expect to register
- Submit Lab Safety Acknowledgments (if you intend to register in lab courses)
- Check your account for Registration Holds
*Contact the office(s) having placed the registration holds to determine what is needed to remove the holds PRIOR to your pre-registration date or registration will remain blocked.
**Should a student not complete all Registration Readiness tasks prior to their pre-registration time, they will be blocked from registration. Economics Advisors cannot remove this block, and the Registrar will not open it back up. It is the student’s responsibility to complete these steps prior to the start of their pre-registration time.
-
How many hours can I register for?
Pre-Registration
During your assigned pre-registration period, you may register for a maximum of 17 hours for the fall and spring semesters and 6 hours for each summer term. If you miss it or do not complete your pre-registration during your assigned 48-hours, you will have to wait for open registration.
Open Registration
When open registration begins, students may increase to 19 hours. Enrolling in hours beyond 19 is considered an overload.
Advisors cannot register you for any class during pre-registration.
Overload Requests
Course overload requests cannot be submitted until open registration begins.
Cumulative GPA Above 3.0
An undergraduate student with an overall grade point average of 3.00 or better may register for a courseload in excess of 19 hours in a fall or spring semester or six hours (seven if part is laboratory) in a summer term with the approval of their advisor. Student Rule 1.13.1
Cumulative GPA Below 3.0
An undergraduate student with an overall grade point average of less than 3.00 must obtain approval of an Economics Advisor and the Dean's Office – Undergraduate Education Advising Office before registering for a courseload in excess of 19 hours in a fall or spring semester or six hours (seven if part is laboratory) in a summer term. Student Rule 1.13.2
Cumulative GPA Below 2.0

I missed my pre-registration window, now what?
Can the advising team register me?
No. You are assigned a specific 48-hour window to register during pre-registration. During that time, only continuing students have access to the registration students. You must wait until open-registration begins. You can find that date in the undergraduate registration schedule.
Can the Registrar open it back up?
Per Aggie One Stop: Students may not request updated time assignments due to missing their registration time, holds, etc. and will need to wait until open registration to register.
Can you save seats for me?
No. Students are responsible for taking care of Registration Readiness items, removing holds, and setting reminders for their 48-hour registration window.
-
How are registration time assignments decided?
Pre-registration times for continuing students are assigned by the Registration and Records Office, not the Department of Economics. Pre-registration times are based on classification and earned hours posted to your Texas A&M transcript. Classification is based on earned hours at the time pre-registration assignments are made, thus in progress hours and unaccepted AP credit are not factored into this total.
I earned more hours, can i get an earlier pre-registration time?
Per Aggie One Stop: Classification is based on earned hours at the time registration assignments are made. Students with a change in classification (due to transfer credits, etc.) after assignments are made can contact registration-admin@tamu.edu to request an updated registration assignment.
Students may not request updated time assignments due to missing their registration time, holds, etc. and will need to wait until open registration to register.
I'm a student worker, do I qualify for early registration?
Per Aggie One Stop: In order to qualify for early preregistration, student employees must meet the criteria AND submit the completed Texas A&M University Student Employment Verification form by the submission deadline. Students must ensure their supervisors have completed their portion of the form on or before the deadline as well.
Visit the Student Employment Verification page for form information and FAQ's.
The DEADLINE for the Office of the Registrar to receive completed Student Employment Verification forms is posted on their website.
Forms will not be accepted after the posted deadline. No exceptions.

Can I get a prerequisite override for an ECON Class?
No. The Department of Economics does not provide prerequisite overrides.
Course(s) required to be completed with a specific grade before enrolling in a more advanced or subsequent course. Student Rule 1.15
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that course prerequisites and/or corequisites are fulfilled at time of registration. The Department of Economics lists all required prerequisites in the catalog and in the class schedule – Aggie Schedule Builder. Economics Advisors will not provide overrides for a student missing one or more prerequisites at time of registration.
Prerequisite reports are used prior to the start of each semester to verify all students meet the course requirements should a student drop an enrolled prerequisite after the pre-registration period. Students transferring a prerequisite course over the summer or winter for a class they plan to take in the fall or spring at Texas A&M should contact an advisor to discuss this process.
Failure to meet course prerequisites will result in a student being dropped from registration in the course.
Note: Other Departments have their own procedures. You will need to look on their advising websites to find this information.
-
Can I get a restriction override for an ECON Class?
No. The Department of Economics does not provide restriction overrides.
Limit enrollment in a class based on criteria like major, class standing, or GPA, ensuring students meet prerequisites and departmental needs before registration.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that course restrictions are met at time of registration. The Department of Economics lists all required restrictions in the class schedule – Aggie Schedule Builder. Economics Advisors will not provide overrides for a student missing one or more restrictions at time of registration.
If a student does not have the restriction met by the time the class begins, the student cannot take the class. No exceptions.
Note: Other Departments have their own procedures. You will need to look on their advising websites to find this information.
-
Can I be forced into a full ECON Class?
No. Economics Advisors do not “force” students into Economics classes regardless of the situation. Gaining instructor permission does not guarantee enrollment in the course since they are not aware of scheduling details such as fire code capacities. Full classes on Aggie Schedule Builder are full. Students who miss their pre-registration time must make a schedule using what is available.
Waitlists
The Department of Economics does not use a waitlist for full courses. Students must monitor Aggie Schedule Builder to find a seat in full courses.
Note: Other Departments have their own procedures. You will need to look on their advising websites to find this information.
-
Can you set a time conflict override for classes that overlap?
No. The Department of Economics will not set time conflict overrides. You need to select different course options.
-
I'm trying to add this class, but it's not letting me - what do I do?
- Check Aggie Schedule Builder for prerequisites to make sure you are eligible to enroll if any are listed
- Check Aggie Schedule Builder for restrictions to make sure you are eligible to enroll if any are listed
- Check Aggie Schedule Builder to see if the course is full
- Check Aggie Schedule Builder to see if you have a time conflict, you cannot register for classes that are not at least 20 minutes apart
Aggie Schedule Builder has all the information you need in regards to your eligibility to enroll in the course.
-
Why can't I find a class I'm wanting to take?
The class is likely not offered in the semester in which you are trying to register for it. You need to find a different class. Some courses are only offered in the spring semester or fall.
-
Why isn't an instructor assigned to the class I'm wanting to take?
The department has not made final arrangements. Register for the course that you need to take to make degree progress, not based on instructor.
-
I'm currently a U2 but the course I need requires U3/U4, when grades post I'll be U3...when can I register?
Since the course restriction explicitly states students must have U3/U4 classification to enroll then you must wait until grades post. Registration restrictions and prerequisites must be met at time of registration. In progress is not factored.

Can I take ECON 202 and/or MATH 142 with ECON 323?
No.
Aggie Schedule Builder Prerequisites: ECON 202 w/Min Grade C and (MATH 142 w/Min Grade C or MATH 151 w/Min Grade C or MATH 171 w/Min Grade C)
ECON 202 Microeconomics and MATH 142 Business Calculus (or an accepted equivalent) with a letter grade of C or higher must be posted to your Texas A&M transcript to register for ECON 323 Microeconomic Theory. No Exceptions.
Should you register for ECON 323 for a future term while currently enrolled in ECON 202 and/or MATH 142, but then Q Drop one or both, you must complete the required prerequisite(s) with a C or higher prior to the start of the term in which you are enrolled in ECON 323. Failure to comply will result in ECON 323 being removed from your schedule.
Plan accordingly.
