There are multiple ways to earn an undergraduate degree in Physics at Texas A&M University. First you will choose which degree program will work best for you — the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). If you choose the B.S., you will then choose which track works best for your interests.
Bachelor of Arts in Physics
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Physics will provide you with a firm foundation in physics. The B.A. program is the most flexible option for a Physics degree because it includes a generous number of electives and requires a minor from another discipline.
You will gain a secondary area of specialization through the minor requirement. This allows you to prepare for any science-related or science-required field, rom intellectual property law and science reporting to physics teaching.
Although not required for the B.A. program, you have the opportunity to become directly involved in any of the active research programs in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Bachelor of Science in Physics
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Physics is more rigorous in its physics and mathematics course requirements than the Bachelor of Arts. An important part of the B.S. program is student participation in experimental or theoretical research guided by faculty.
There are seven different degree programs available that lead to a B.S. in Physics at Texas A&M:
- General Physics (no track)
- Astrophysics Track
- Business Track
- Computational Science Track
- Materials Science Track
- Physics and Mathematics Teaching Track
- Physical Science Teaching Track
Each track results in the B.S. in Physics degree and has the same core physics courses and the same total number of hours.
The B.S. in Physics is excellent preparation for fields that are rooted in physics, such as:
- Astronomy
- Chemistry
- Material science
- Oceanography
- Nano-engineering
Physicists also apply their talents to molecular biology, biochemistry and medicine.

Bachelor of Science in Physics — No Track
The general B.S. in Physics (no track) is designed primarily for students who wish to pursue an advanced degree in physics or employment as a professional physicist in an industrial setting.

Bachelor of Science in Physics — Astrophysics Track
The B.S. Astrophysics track will provide you with a solid foundation in basic physics combined with knowledge of fascinating astrophysical objects and phenomena. It will prepare you for graduate studies in Astronomy, Astrophysics, and related fields. You will also learn quantitative problem-solving skills, experimental research skills, and expertise in computer simulations that are highly valued in any field and any industry.

Bachelor of Science in Physics — Computational Science Track
Physics and other sciences increasingly rely on advanced computer simulations and data analysis to develop realistic mathematical models of complex phenomena. Computers also process huge amounts of data coming from particle accelerators and astronomical surveys.
The B.S. Computational Science track will provide you with the skills to pursue advanced studies in this area. You can also directly enter the workforce in virtually any industry, as the demand for experts with advanced computer skills will only grow with time.

The B.S. Physical Science Teaching track will provide you with a solid foundation in Physics and the courses required for the aggieTEACH – Science minor (must apply). Upon completion of this degree and one semester of clinical teaching, you will hold a Texas Physical Science (grades 6-12) certification. Although this degree is designed for students who want to teach, the Physics courses also build a strong foundation in critical thinking and quantitative problem-solving skills that are attractive to many areas of industry.
