The graduate program in English offers courses leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and doctorate in English. The department offers training that features a range of methods and approaches to English-language literature and culture while emphasizing skills in written and oral communication, critical investigation and analysis and mastery of both traditional and emerging areas within the field of English. We welcome students in a range of specialties but also have particular areas of strength that reflect the work done by our graduate faculty and are reflected in our range of Graduate Courses we offer.

Graduate work in English prepares students for teaching careers in universities and community colleges, and also for careers in writing, editing and other professional fields. We support conference and research travel, training in pedagogy, and professionalization. Recent graduates have entered a range of careers from higher education to editing.
