Dr. Viana received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Child Psychology from Penn State University and completed his psychology residency training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). His program of research focuses on the examination of temperamental and cognitive-affective mechanisms implicated in anxiety and related disorders across both youth and adult populations. The overarching goal of Dr. Viana’s program of research is to advance knowledge regarding the underlying causes of anxiety disorders, to reduce their comorbidity with other problematic outcomes (e.g., alcohol use), and to improve existing treatments. His research has been funded by the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the University of Houston, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Alcohol Use and Alcoholism, the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, and the Texas Children Mental Health Care Consortium. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the area of anxiety in both children and adult populations. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. Dr. Viana serves as Associate Editor of Child Psychiatry and Human Development and Evidence-Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, and as Section Editor of Advances in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health.
