Prior experience and future careers go hand in hand. Obtaining relevant work experience prior to the career search is a must. Some students hold part-time jobs in the fields of Communication, Telecommunication Media Studies, or Journalism, and others have significant volunteer experience that has prepared them for the future. However, interning is a great way to explore career options and enhance marketable experience and perspective. Communication, Journalism, and Telecommunication Media Studies students are prepared for many career paths.
Let us know your dream and we will let you know how Communication, Journalism, or Telecommunication Media Studies will lead you toward it!
Internships
Some students choose to do internships on their own and to simply note this experience on their resumes. Please contact us so that we may help you note that on your transcript, as well. Others desire to earn academic credit by participating in the internship course, COMM/JOUR 484.
To apply for academic credit for an internship related to the Communication, Journalism, or Telecommunication Media Studies majors, students must first acquire a position. The Undergraduate Studies office provides frequents leads to internship options via email, the TAMU Career Center posts internship opportunities, the Department of Communication & Journalism Alumni Advisory Board provides notice of internship options, and then students often use their own networking and connections to find internships.
Interested in an internship?
If you have secured an internship, have a minimum 2.5 gpr, and have been a COMM or TCMS major for at least two semesters OR a COMM minor with at least 12 hours of COMM, please complete the Request for Application (COMM 484) or contact Dr. Kristy Kulhanek.
A media internship is needed to complete the Journalism Studies major or Journalism minor, and it can be done during the fall, spring or summer semesters. The requirements for the internship include performing original journalistic production work and completing a minimum of 200 hours on the job. You must complete JOUR 203 before your internship and you must enroll in JOUR 484 before you begin your internship. Complete the Request for Application (JOUR 484) or contact Prof. Nancy Street.
Careers
The Alumni Advisory Board, comprised of Former Students from Communication, Telecommunication Media Studies and Journalism, provides workshops and mentoring to assist current COMM, TCMS, and JOUR undergraduate students in their job search. Additionally, each COMM, TCMS, and JOUR major is required to participate in the Success Initiative: Degree Check-up program early in the Junior year. This audit and conversation conducted by the Advising Staff, help the student to make final adjustments in course selection and to refine goals for additional skills and experience development. Beginning with the Freshmen year, COMM, TCMS, and JOUR majors are urged to work with the TAMU Career Center to prepare for the job search.
